Elfreth’s Alley opens its door this Saturday at Fete Day 2009!
People, especially children are fascinated with living in the past. Each generation wonders how you could even get by without the bare essentials such as not having Internet (gasp) or a cell phone (eek!) or wait. - not even cable television, unbelievable! Yes, I can bear witness to this “standard” upbringing because I’m 29 years old. Ouch! Yes, I’ve led quite a life but it pales to comparison when living in Elfreth’s Alley.
Tucked away between Race and Arch on 2nd, this “two way street” is the oldest continuously inhabited street in the country dating back to 1703. Many a question is raised about learning the history of the houses and to be honest, what it looks like inside.
Out of 32 homes, two are normally open to the public while the rest are residential even though I’m sure that has never really stopped anyone from peeking inside. Well this Saturday; wonder no more as the Elfreth’s Alley association hosts Fete Day 2009.
Fete, an 18th Century French term for party” will be the central idea as the residents swing open their doors and let you into their homes.
There will also be plenty of activity happening on the street as well. Enjoy craft demonstrations such as papermaking and a wood turner from the Wood Turning Center. And don’t forget to feed the hunger with hot dogs and water ice!
This all-inclusive ticket can be purchased at the festival or by clicking here For more details about this historic event that only comes once a year, stop by the Visitor Desk to get your fill!
